Did you know that donating shares is one of the most tax-effective ways to give to charity? There is no capital gains tax on the shares you donate, and you can claim tax relief on any costs linked to your donation, such as brokers’ fees.
As Christopher Cannon (B2 1956-61) discovered, he even saved himself some income tax, too. “I was very keen to do my bit, and giving via shares has been a very tax-efficient way for me to do it. If I had sold the shares myself, I would have had to pay far more tax. It was very straightforward too,” explains Chris.
I am giving to bursaries as I like the idea of Marlborough looking to its roots, and helping those less fortunate attend Marlborough. The College began by helping the sons of vicars. It’s wonderful to be able to help talented young people now”.
